The Process

Four Steps. Shared Impact.

Two steps from you. Two steps from us. Together, every bag becomes a measurable contribution to a cleaner, more circular New York City.

Your Part

Two Steps. That's All We Ask.

Your role in the process is intentionally minimal. No sorting, no drop-off, no scheduling hassle. Bag it and put it out — the rest is on us.

01

Bag It

Fill any bag — a trash bag, a tote, a laundry bag — with the clothes, shoes, and accessories you want to recycle. No sorting, no labeling, no prep. Any condition is fine. If it's made of fabric, it belongs in the bag.

02

Put It Out

Leave your bag outside your door or in your building's lobby during your scheduled pickup window. You don't need to be home. That's it — your part is done.

Thriftier NYC's Part

We Handle Everything After.

From the moment your bag leaves your door, Thriftier NYC takes over — collecting, sorting, and directing every item to its highest-value recovery pathway, then reporting back to you with the real-world impact your contribution generates.

03

Collect, Confirm, Analyze & Direct

Our team will pick up your bag, log the weight, and send you a confirmation. Every item will be hand-sorted at our NYC facility — prioritizing chemical and mechanical recycling, with wearable pieces fulfilling charitable mandates and everything else routed to upcycling or industrial repurposing. Nothing goes to landfill.

04

Impact Report

After each pickup you will receive a personal impact summary — pounds diverted, CO₂ avoided, water saved. Your numbers will roll up to your building's total, your block's total, and your borough's contribution to citywide change. Every bag counts toward a shared NYC goal.

This is a shared system

Your two steps make our two steps possible. Every bag enrolled, every pickup scheduled, every impact report generated — it all adds up to a city-wide shift in how New York handles fashion waste. You are not just recycling textiles. You are part of the infrastructure being built.

After Pickup

Where Your Clothes Go

Every item collected will be validated at your local NYC facility, then routed to the highest ecological recovery pathway. Here is how our projected breakdown is structured across the recyclables we collect.

42%

Charitable Fulfillment

Wearable items fulfilling donation mandates for local community charities and small business partners — after materials recovery pathways are exhausted.

31%

Fiber Recycled

Broken down into raw fiber and spun into new yarn and fabric.

14%

Upcycled

Repurposed by NYC independent designers into new one-of-a-kind pieces.

9%

FAQ

Common Questions

Is it really free?

Yes — always. Thriftier NYC is funded through fashion brand partnerships and sustainability-focused revenue streams. There is no cost to residents, ever.

Do I need to be home for the pickup?

No. Just leave your bag outside your door or in your building lobby at the agreed time. Our team will collect it and send you a confirmation.

What if my clothes are damaged or stained?

We accept everything. Damaged or stained items will be routed to mechanical fiber recycling, chemical processing, or industrial repurposing — nothing goes to landfill.

How often can I schedule a pickup?

As often as you like. There's no minimum or maximum. Some residents schedule weekly; others do a big seasonal clear-out a few times a year.

Do you serve my building?

We are launching across all five boroughs. Enroll your address to check availability — if we are not in your area yet, you will be first on the list when we expand to your block.

What happens to the data about my pickups?

Your pickup data is used only to calculate your personal impact summary and contribute to neighborhood-level totals on our Impact page. We never sell personal data.
